The blank wall is intimidating. But there are a handful of compositions that always look considered — whether you’re working with framed art, prints, mirrors or mixed media.
Rule 1: The 57-inch centre
The centre of your piece (or the centre of a grouping) should sit at 57 inches from the floor. That’s gallery standard — the average human eye-line. It works in every room.
Rule 2: Two-thirds over furniture
When hanging above a sofa, bed or console, the art should be two-thirds the width of the furniture below. Narrower looks orphaned. Wider looks chaotic.
Rule 3: Group with anchors
For a gallery wall, pick your largest piece and anchor a corner with it. Build out from there — smaller frames cluster around the anchor like satellites. Vary frame styles but keep one element consistent (all black, all wood, all matted).
Rule 4: Leave breathing room
Between frames in a grouping: 2–3 inches. Tighter feels cramped. Looser breaks the visual connection.
