A great table lamp is a piece of decor that happens to give light. Get it right and the whole room shifts. Here’s how to choose well.

Start with the function

What is the lamp actually for? Three categories:

  • Task light — reading, working, focused activities. Bright, directional, neutral or cool white (4000K+).
  • Ambient light — background warmth, mood. Soft, omnidirectional, warm white (2700K).
  • Accent light — highlighting art or architecture. Narrow beam, often cooler.

Pick the right height

When seated next to the lamp, the bottom of the shade should sit at eye level — usually 24–30 inches from the surface. Too low and you stare into the bulb. Too high and the room loses intimacy.

Shade material matters

Linen and paper diffuse warmly — the soft glow of a hotel suite. Metal shades direct light up or down, ideal for task lighting. Glass shades feel sculptural even when off.

Three placements that always work

  1. Bedside — pair of matched lamps for symmetry, or two distinct lamps for personality.
  2. Living room console — a single tall lamp anchors the space behind a sofa.
  3. Desk corner — angled task lamp + a small ambient piece nearby. Layered light always wins.
